Execute the Plan

Try it. It won’t all go well. That’s to be expected, so you’ll be making active revisions as you go. Observe everything, and reflect. Often.

When I’m in this part of my work, I try to remember that I’m doing this for my students, yes, but I’m potentially doing this for every student on the grade team or in the school, so I want to keep examples of everything and I want to start crafting the story of how this work came to be, why it came to be, and how it can go for everyone else.

I’ve really been struggling with this textbook. When it was given to us, I studied it carefully. I recognize all the work and insight that went into writing and selecting it for the district. I taught my way through the first three chapters, and I was not seeing the level of engagement or student productivity that I wanted, so I asked myself, “I know my students well. How can I use that knowledge and build on what the authors of this book have done?” Our kids are social. They learn a lot from each other. I decided to add more opportunities for kids to talk and more visual and experiential support.

I added a few opportunities to talk to each day’s plan and I added opportunities for them to work with artifacts and visuals every day. I decided to test my additions for a week to see if they would help the kids to grasp the material better. Here are my findings. …
